Become a Better Presenter
The ASC offers a number of different ways for building on the skills, abilities, and confidence you’ve gained from our core public speaking programme.
Competitions
For our more competitive members, there is the opportunity to take part in a number of public speaking competitions. There are three main annual contests in Speech, Evaluation and Topics which take place at Club, Area and Regional levels and then culminate at National.
These are complemented by other competitive events across the Association including team speaking, raconteur (storytelling and narrative), applied speech and debating competitions.
Speaking Online
In an age of Zoom and other online platforms, it’s now possible to hold high quality events with people from all around the world. But public speaking online presents some new and interesting challenges and requires different and ever evolving skills.
Although club meetings are at the heart of what we do, we have also embraced online speaking and have invested in helping our clubs to deliver meetings online as well as helping our members learn, practise and develop the required online skills.
Educational Sessions
In addition to the usual programme of Speeches, Evaluations and Topics, seminars have always been one of our most important learning vehicles and a great way of challenging advanced speakers to progress further whilst also sharing their knowledge.
The ASC has now evolved a signature approach that includes interaction, playfulness, and curiosity. Using different techniques, including innovative games, exploration of topics from varying perspectives, respectful discussion and practical exercises, the ASC consistently delivers seminars that engage and inspire.
We also frequently attract experts from outside the ASC to deliver seminars for us and the ASC can now call on partners to enhance our learning events.
"Since joining York Speakers Club I have come to realise that if I had known in my previous career what I have learned at the club, I would have been more successful than I was and I would have achieved my success quicker than I did."
Peter Jensen, York Speakers Club
World Speech Day
Every year in March, people from all over the world give speeches at World Speech Day (WSD) events or record them and upload them to YouTube.
It’s a day to celebrate speeches and speech giving around the world. Anyone can host a WSD event and we actively encourage and support our clubs and members to take part.
Games and Activities
The ASC has developed several games and activities to bring communication learning to life in clubs by injecting fun, energy and play into what can be difficult concepts. You will find a list of games available in our resources section.
