Become a Better Leader. Our Development Pathway

by Editorial Team Leave a Comment

If you’ve been following our posts, you’ll know we have been writing about our straightforward approach when it comes to development. We have a three limbed Development Pathway, and in this post, we take a quick look at the third limb, namely: Become A Better Leader.

A Quick Recap

We designed our Development Pathway so that you are at the centre. That means you can pick and choose how to engage with our Pathway in a way that suits you, rather than having to fit into a predesigned “one size fits all” process. That’s because we believe “one size” rarely does fit all particularly when it comes to public speaking and leadership.

The first two limbs are Become a Better Speaker and Become a Better Presenter and these both include a choice of all sorts of practical, effective, and relevant ways to develop and hone your public speaking skills. But we also recognise that good leadership often comes hand in hand with public speaking and therefore the third limb of our Development Pathway is designed to help you practice and improve your leadership skills.

leadership development

Become a Better Leader

Leadership is relevant in so many different areas, from leading and being part of your community, to nailing that promotion at work or campaigning in respect of an important issue. The Become a Better Leader element of our pathway provides you with advice, support and numerous ways to practice and improve your leadership skills. In fact, because we know that the skills we have on offer will be so important for some of our members, we now offer our new Bronze, Silver and Gold Leadership Awards as well as our Evaluation and Judging Awards. These awards provide you with the chance to push yourself (perhaps out of your comfort zone) but also are a recognition of all that you achieve.

Club Leadership

Leadership starts at club level and for many, that’s more than enough. From organising and chairing club events, to taking on a committee or presidential role, evaluating or organising competitions, we offer dozens of different ways you can start to develop your skills in the supportive environment of your own club.

Area, Regional or National

The fact that we’re a national organisation offers our members a really exciting opportunity. We have roles at Area, Regional and National level which involve a variety of different skills and requirements. Specific roles include supporting and helping to develop all the clubs in your Area or Region, or working on PR, promotion, educational development or finance. Then there are also the roles of Area Presidents, Regional Co-Ordinator and National President all of which require a key understanding and ability to support, encourage and inspire those working in your team.

National Competitions and National Conference

Our prestigious annual conference is our showcase event of the year, usually held over a long weekend at a suitably illustrious venue. It includes the finals of our national competitions, our AGM, and a host of other activities as well as a gala dinner. Being involved with the conference convening committee to deliver an outstanding conference experience or as part of the competition organisers and judges are challenging, exciting and significant achievements.

It doesn’t stop there

We hope it’s clear that our Development Pathway offers lots of different ways for you to learn and improve new skills, from delivering your first tentative speech, to standing up at the National Conference to address the entire organisation. And if you think you could never do that, well, you’re not alone because many of our members felt exactly the same when they started out too. But so many of our members also find that they go on to achieve more and improve more than they ever expected.

If you’d like to know more, please get in touch or better still, come to one of our meetings.
